Social Work England has established a new independent support service to assist everyone involved in fitness to practise proceedings, offering emotional support and guidance throughout what can often be a lengthy and distressing regulatory process.
The service, announced this week, will be available to social workers under investigation, as well as witnesses, complainants and family members. It forms part of Social Work England’s response to the Independent Review of Social Work Regulation, which highlighted the need for clearer communication, better support and a more humane approach to fitness to practise.
According to the regulator, the new provision is designed to help people understand the process, manage its emotional impact and access appropriate wellbeing resources. It will operate separately from Social Work England to ensure independence and trust, particularly for those who may feel vulnerable or unsure about engaging with the regulator directly.
The initiative follows sustained feedback from the sector about the stress and uncertainty associated with fitness to practise investigations, which can take many months to conclude. Social Work England said the service aims to improve people’s experience of the system while maintaining the integrity and fairness of regulatory decision‑making.
