The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has reported a record 94.4% revalidation rate, with over 240,000 professionals renewing registration as it begins a major review.
The NMC’s latest annual report shows that between April 2024 and March 2025, more nurses, midwives, and nursing associates completed revalidation than ever before. This three-yearly process ensures registrants maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills aligned with the NMC Code, supporting safe and effective care across health and social care settings.
The record completion rate coincides with the launch of a comprehensive review of both the revalidation process and the Code. The review aims to modernise standards to reflect evolving professional roles, public expectations, and the current healthcare landscape. It forms part of a wider programme that includes reviewing practice learning requirements for students and regulation of advanced practice.
The NMC is inviting registrants to join its community of interest and participate in webinars to stay informed and contribute to the review process. Updated standards are expected to take effect in October 2027.
Donna O’Boyle, Acting Executive Director of Professional Practice, said:
“Revalidation is fundamental to safe and effective nursing and midwifery practice. It ensures professionals continually reflect on their practice to maintain the vital knowledge and skills required to meet people’s evolving care needs throughout their careers.
“It’s great to see more nurses, midwives and nursing associates revalidating than ever before. Now, as we embark on a review of revalidation, we encourage both professionals and the public to engage with us ahead of any changes. Their insight will be key to shaping the future of the process.
“This review sits alongside a wider programme to modernise our standards, including a refresh of the Code, a review of practice learning requirements for students, and also advanced practice regulation. We’re committed to collaborating widely to ensure these standards and guidance support professionals to deliver the best possible care for communities across the UK.”
