The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has issued a strong condemnation of racism following an alleged racially motivated attack on NHS nurse Apple Moorhouse in a Yorkshire park. Moorhouse, who has worked in the NHS for over a decade and originally moved to the UK from the Philippines, says she will leave the health service after the incident.

Footage circulating online appears to show a man and woman directing racial abuse at Moorhouse and a child in Manor Health Park, including throwing water and making derogatory remarks about immigration.

The incident comes amid growing concern about rising racial tensions across the UK. With nearly a third of the UK’s 853,000 nursing and midwifery professionals identifying as Black, Asian or minority ethnic, the NMC highlighted the persistent discrimination many face both within and outside the workplace.

NMC Chief Executive and Registrar Paul Rees MBE described the attack as “shocking and disgraceful,” and called for solidarity and respect for all healthcare professionals. He emphasised the vital contributions of Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff to the NHS and urged the sector to confront racism wherever it occurs.

The NMC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every nurse, midwife and nursing associate feels safe, valued and respected in their role.
