The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has approved a new midwifery programme at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU), marking a significant step in restoring midwifery education across Kent and Medway. The programme, set to launch in September 2025, follows the withdrawal of NMC approval from CCCU’s previous course in 2023 due to concerns about its ability to adequately prepare students for professional registration.

The newly approved programme has been developed in close collaboration with the NMC, incorporating feedback and guidance to ensure it meets the regulator’s standards for safe and effective practice. It aims to equip future midwives with the skills and knowledge required to deliver high-quality care to women, babies, and families across the UK.

The NMC’s decision reflects its strengthened approach to education quality assurance, ensuring public protection through rigorous monitoring and partnership with education providers. The approval of CCCU’s new programme is expected to help rebuild the region’s midwifery workforce pipeline and support the delivery of safe, effective maternity care.

Donna O’Boyle MBE, Acting Executive Director of Professional Practice at the NMC, said:

“Midwives hold a unique and trusted role, providing care and support during the most significant and life-changing moments in people’s lives. We’re therefore pleased to approve Canterbury Christ Church University’s new midwifery programme – a process which has demonstrated learning, openness and collaboration with student and public wellbeing at its heart.”

Dr Paul Driscoll-Evans, Dean of the School of Nursing, Midwifery, Allied and Public Health at CCCU, said:

“We have worked closely with health leaders across Kent, Medway and at national level, as well as service users to better understand their lived experience, alongside insights from our students and alumni. Not only does the course meet the NMC’s rigorous standards for clinical competence and professional development, but it will also support the region’s long-term workforce plans.”
