Social Work England has confirmed that for the current registration year (1 December 2025 to 30 November 2026), it will review a sample of up to 3% of continuing professional development (CPD) records following the close of the renewal period on 30 November 2026.

CPD is an important part of social work practice, supporting social workers to maintain and develop the skills and knowledge they need to provide safe and effective support to people who use services. Completing and recording CPD is a statutory requirement for maintaining registration as a social worker in England and demonstrating ongoing fitness to practise.

As part of annual registration renewal, social workers must complete their application to renew, pay their registration fee, and record a minimum of 2 different pieces of CPD in their online account, one of which must include a peer reflection. Professional standard 4 is dedicated specifically to CPD, reflecting its importance within professional practice.

These requirements help provide assurance to the public that registered social workers are maintaining up-to-date skills and knowledge and continuing to meet the professional standards. Where CPD records do not meet requirements, Social Work England may make further enquiries and take action where appropriate. Where there is a clear breach of our requirements, this may include removal from the register.

Social Work England will continue to consider its longer-term approach to CPD review and will engage further with social workers, employers and sector partners as this work develops. This will also take account of the outcome of the independent review of Social Work Regulation.
