The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and independent charity Pharmacist Support have formalised a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening support for the wellbeing of pharmacy professionals across Great Britain.

The newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) sets out a shared commitment to improving the health and resilience of individuals working in pharmacy — recognising that professional wellbeing is closely linked to the safe and effective care of patients.

The GPhC, which regulates pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy premises, will now collaborate more closely with Pharmacist Support, a long-established charity offering confidential emotional, financial, and practical support to pharmacy students, trainees, and professionals. While their roles remain independent, the agreement provides a framework for joint working — including the responsible sharing of insights, data, and resources.

“This new agreement means we can do more together to support the wellbeing of the pharmacy professions,” said Duncan Rudkin, Chief Executive of the GPhC. “It will enable us to promote the work of Pharmacist Support to the people we regulate, and to learn from their insights to help us continually improve.”

Among the objectives of the MoU are commitments to:

  • Exchange expertise and intelligence while safeguarding confidentiality
  • Maintain effective communication channels
  • Clarify when the two organisations will act jointly or independently
  • Be transparent about the scope of collaboration

Pharmacist Support’s Chief Executive, Danielle Hunt, welcomed the partnership, noting that demand for the charity’s services has continued to rise as mental health and wellbeing challenges persist within the sector.

“Through campaigns like ACTNow, counselling services and peer support, we’ve built a strong foundation of evidence on the issues facing pharmacy professionals,” she said. “This new agreement extends our reach so that no member of our pharmacy family needs to face challenging times alone.”

Both organisations emphasised that the MoU will not change the independence of Pharmacist Support or how its services are delivered. Confidentiality and impartiality will remain cornerstones of the charity’s approach.

The move has been described as a timely and practical step towards creating a more resilient pharmacy workforce — supporting professionals so they can continue delivering safe, high-quality care for the public.
