The GMC commissioned this research to help it understand parliamentarians’ and legislators’ perceptions of the regulator in 2024.
What were the key findings?
- 64% of parliamentarians were confident in how the GMC regulates doctors.
- MPs with a stated interest in the NHS or public health were 11-points more likely to be confident in the GMC’s regulation of doctors.
- Those confident in the GMC’s regulation believed that the GMC looks out for the interest of both patients and doctors, and generally trust regulators.
- 31% of parliamentarians agreed that the GMC’s approach to regulation anticipates and responds to the needs of the individual parts of the UK, this outweighed disagreement (16%).
- 31% of respondents agreed the GMC is focusing on the right issues as a regulator, with very low levels of disagreement.
The GMC said:
“This research was commissioned to help us understand parliamentarians and legislators’ perceptions of us and our role in 2024. We have been commissioning these surveys since 2021 in order to helps us monitor changes in perceptions over time.
“Findings enable us to identify how effective our current engagement activities are and where we need to focus our efforts over the coming years.”
