Nine out of ten fitness to practise referrals to Social Work England were closed at the initial triage stage in 2025–26, despite a significant rise in the number of cases concluded over the year. According to Community Care, the regulator closed 88% of concerns without requiring a full investigation, even as it completed 55% more cases than in 2024–25.
The figures indicate that, although referrals increased, fewer social workers were ultimately found to have impaired fitness to practise.
