GOsC’s CPD Evaluation Survey 2024 explores the impact and possible benefits of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme, and whether guidance can be improved to better support osteopaths to meet the requirements of the scheme.
The survey, which ran from January to April 2024, looked at the impact of the scheme for the first time putting GOsC in a better position to help osteopaths with their concerns or needs around their CPD. It also assessed whether osteopaths were able to:
- engage with the CPD scheme and the Osteopathic Practice Standards (OPS)
- get support from colleagues as part of the CPD scheme
- create, build or increase their professional networks
The role of the peer reviewer and osteopaths’ experiences of the Peer Discussion Review (PDR) process was also explored. The survey was open to a select number of osteopaths to encourage responses that were representative of the osteopathic profession, and to help make sure individuals with certain protected characteristics had their voices heard.
A total of 53 osteopaths completed the survey, with the findings showing that osteopaths have clearly engaged with the CPD scheme and the OPS, and in most cases have found the scheme to be beneficial. Responses also showed that the scheme encouraged a small number of osteopaths to create successful networks and have more discussions with their peers, helping them gain different perspectives on practice.
GOsC said it plans to:
- strengthen and encourage CPD in the areas of professional boundaries and equality, diversity and inclusion
- address challenges with the PDR form to make this more manageable for osteopaths to complete
- strengthen the focus on the aims of the CPD scheme, promoting community and encouraging opportunities to engage with colleagues
- update the CPD guidance to take account of our transition into practice research
- strengthen the guidance about an osteopath’s range of practice including non-osteopathic forms of treatment or adjunctive therapies
- think about how we deal with Artificial Intelligence in terms of how it can be used positively to support CPD.
