The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has issued a clear statement reaffirming that it will not tolerate racist, offensive or discriminatory behaviour towards its staff, registrants or anyone involved in its fitness to practise processes. The regulator said it will take action whenever such behaviour occurs, including restricting contact with individuals or referring matters to the police.

Published on 3 September 2026, the statement emphasises that racist or discriminatory language directed at nurses, midwives, nursing associates or members of the public may also indicate that a referral or whistleblowing disclosure has been made with discriminatory intent. In these cases, the NMC will consider this as part of its assessment of any fitness to practise concerns.

The regulator highlighted its values of Integrity, Fairness, Respect, Equity and Effectiveness, noting that staff have the right to work without fear of discrimination, abuse or harassment. Its Respectful Behaviour Policy outlines unacceptable conduct, including racial slurs, aggressive behaviour, and prejudiced demands such as refusing to deal with staff based on their race or ethnicity.

The NMC said it will always challenge racist or discriminatory behaviour and will act to protect staff and professionals on its register. Actions may include restricting contact with the organisation or referring incidents to law enforcement.
