The regulator attributed the growth partly to additional support measures introduced for those experiencing technical issues with the new MyGDC online system. The GDC confirmed on 23 July that any dental care professional unable to renew due to system difficulties would not be removed, provided they contacted the regulator before the deadline. Customer service capacity was also increased to manage enquiries and assist registrants.
Despite these measures, 3,769 dental care professionals were removed from the register after the renewal period, with reasons including voluntary removal, non‑payment, retirement and notifications of death. Removal rates remained broadly consistent with previous years at 4.5% of those who made annual retention fee payments.
The dental nurse workforce saw the largest numerical increase, rising to 69,824 registrants. Numbers also grew across dental hygienists (11,407), dental therapists (8,824), orthodontic therapists (1,340) and clinical dental technicians (456). Dental technicians were the only group to decline, falling slightly to 4,824.
Not all professionals who leave the dental care professional register stop practising dentistry. Of the 250 dental hygienists removed this year, 63 remain registered as dentists, while 86 of the 203 dental therapists removed are also now registered as dentists.
The GDC noted that register numbers fluctuate throughout the year as professionals join and leave. It has made restoration easier for those off the register for less than 12 months who have maintained their CPD, enabling them to return to practice more quickly.
