The Professional Standards Authority (PSA) has published its annual performance review of the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), confirming that the regulator met all 18 Standards of Good Regulation during the period 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025.
The review is designed to assess how effectively healthcare regulators protect the public and promote confidence in their professions.
The PSA commended the GOsC for its consistent performance, particularly in relation to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). It highlighted the Patient Involvement Forum as a notable example of good practice in inclusive engagement.
While the GOsC continues to demonstrate strength across most standards, the report also noted two areas requiring improvement:
-
Slow progress in updating its fitness to practise guidance.
-
A shortfall in the collection of EDI registrant data, though the GOsC has committed to remedial action.
The 2024/25 period also saw the GOsC launch its first Registrant and Perceptions Survey, offering insights into how osteopaths and stakeholders view the regulator. It has begun implementing changes based on the findings.
Additionally, the GOsC completed work on updating its CPD guidance and Peer Discussion Review templates, incorporating previous consultation feedback.
Looking ahead, the PSA will monitor several developments, including:
-
The in-housing of education quality assurance from July 2025.
-
Recruitment of Patient Council Associates under the Patient Partners Programme.
-
The outcome of an independent review of GOsC’s tone of voice.
The PSA emphasised that meeting all 18 standards reflects strong regulatory performance, though it doesn’t imply perfection. The organisation will continue ongoing monitoring, with particular attention to areas flagged for development.
