The UK Register of dental care professionals (DCPs) has grown to its largest size in recent years, following the completion of the annual renewal period. As of early August, a total of 80,657 DCPs were registered across the UK, marking a notable increase of 4,764 professionals—or 6.26 percent—compared to the same point in 2024.

This year, 3,312 DCPs did not renew their registration, representing 4.1 percent of those who had paid their Annual Retention Fee (ARF) by 31 July. This figure is lower than the average non-renewal rate of 5.5 percent recorded over the previous four years. The reasons for removal from the register include voluntary withdrawal, non-payment, retirement, and notifications of death.

The breakdown of ARF payments received shows a steady upward trend over the past five years, rising from 69,556 in 2021 to 80,507 in 2025. The final register count following removals stood at 80,657, up from 75,905 in 2024. While the register fluctuates throughout the year, the overall pattern remains consistent: registrations typically increase due to new entrants and then decline slightly after the renewal period.

UK Fitness to Practise News

As of 11 August, the largest professional group on the register was dental nurses, with 65,797 registrants. Other notable figures include 11,065 dental hygienists, 8,459 dental therapists, and 1,257 orthodontic therapists. The number of removals by professional title was slightly higher than last year, totalling 3,455 compared to 3,381 in 2024.

To support professionals returning to practice, the registration process has been streamlined, the GDC said. Those who have been off the register for less than 12 months and have maintained compliance with continuing professional development (CPD) requirements can now restore their registration by signing a declaration, rather than submitting a full CPD record.

In July, the first inferential analysis report for DCPs was published, combining data on working patterns, registration trends, and aggregated fitness to practise information. Monthly registration updates and an annual statistical report are also available to provide ongoing insight into the composition and dynamics of the DCP workforce.
