The Department of Health and Social Care (DH) has launched an investigation into the safety and effectiveness of private non-NHS prescribing in the UK, amid growing concerns about patient safeguards and system oversight.
Announced on 12 August, the department’s call for evidence invites views from healthcare professionals, regulators, and the public on how private prescribing currently operates. The review will examine whether “appropriate safeguards are in place” and whether the system remains “fit for purpose” as accessibility to private services continues to expand.
“As accessibility increases, we need to ensure all the ways people access medicines legally continue to be safe and effective,” the DH said. “It is essential that the system continuously supports patients.”
The investigation forms part of a broader effort to assess regulatory frameworks and ensure consistent standards across both NHS and private healthcare provision. The DH has not yet confirmed a timeline for publishing its findings but indicated that stakeholder engagement will be central to shaping future policy.
Further details on how to submit evidence are expected to be released later this month.
