Social workers practising in England are now required to renew their registration with Social Work England to continue using the protected title and working in regulated roles. The renewal window opened on 1 September 2025, and the deadline to apply is 11.59pm (UK time) on Sunday 30 November 2025.

To successfully renew, social workers must complete three key actions: submit a renewal application form, pay the registration fee, and record at least two pieces of continuing professional development (CPD), including a peer reflection. These requirements are part of the annual legal obligation for all registered social workers in England.

Failure to renew by the deadline will result in removal from the register, meaning individuals will no longer be legally permitted to practise or refer to themselves as social workers. Those removed will need to apply for restoration before returning to practice.

Rachel McAssey, Assistant Director of Regulation at Social Work England, confirmed that email notifications have been sent to all registrants. “We will send reminders to encourage social workers to complete the registration renewal process,” she said. “Please carefully check all emails and text messages received from Social Work England.”

Social workers can pay the renewal fee in full or in two instalments via Direct Debit. To use the instalment option, a Direct Debit must be set up by 5:00pm (UK time) on 19 September 2025. Registrants may also be eligible to claim tax relief on the fee through HMRC.

Social Work England advises registrants to complete the renewal process early to avoid last-minute delays and allow time for meaningful reflection on CPD. Those on extended leave, such as parental or sick leave, who wish to remain on the register must still complete the renewal process.

New registrants who join between September and November 2025 are exempt from submitting CPD for this cycle, but must still pay the registration fee for the 2025–2026 year.

Additional guidance is available on Social Work England’s website, including details on CPD requirements and upcoming support sessions led by regional engagement teams. Social workers are also reminded to update their registration status and make a self-referral if there are any changes to their fitness to practise. Those intending to leave the profession should apply for voluntary removal from the register.
