The Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has opened a public consultation to help shape new standards of conduct and performance for chief pharmacists, following recent legislative changes that expand its regulatory remit.

The consultation, launched on 7 August and running until 2 October 2025, seeks input from pharmacy professionals, healthcare organisations and the wider public. It aims to clarify the responsibilities of chief pharmacists in light of amendments introduced through The Pharmacy (Preparation and Dispensing Errors – Hospital and Other Pharmacy Services) Order 2022, which modified the Medicines Act 1968.

These legislative changes grant the PSNI authority to formally define the role of chief pharmacists and establish expectations around professional conduct and performance. The proposed standards are designed to support governance frameworks within pharmacy services, ensuring accountability and promoting safe practice.

The PSNI emphasised that the standards are intended to reinforce legal protections for pharmacy professionals in cases of inadvertent preparation or dispensing errors, provided that appropriate governance systems are in place. This includes having clear lines of accountability and well-defined responsibilities for chief pharmacists.

In its announcement, the PSNI encouraged “all interested parties” to contribute to the consultation and share their views on the proposed framework. The organisation noted that the standards will play a key role in supporting pharmacy teams and safeguarding patient care across hospital and other pharmacy services.

The consultation represents a significant step in formalising leadership roles within pharmacy and aligning professional expectations with evolving regulatory requirements. Full details and access to the consultation are available via the PSNI’s official website.
