The Professional Standards Authority (PSA) has released its annual performance review of the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), confirming that the regulator met 17 out of 18 Standards of Good Regulation during the 2024/25 period.
The review highlights the GCC’s continued strong performance, particularly in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), where its extensive activity and stakeholder recognition were praised. The PSA introduced a new approach to assessing EDI in 2024, requiring regulators to demonstrate delivery of four high-level outcomes. The GCC met this standard again, with its work described as impressive for a regulator of its size.
The GCC also published a new Code of Professional Practice this year, set to take effect from 1 January 2026. The PSA noted that the GCC is actively updating its guidance to support implementation and exploring areas where new guidance may help registrants apply the standards.
However, the GCC did not meet Standard 15, which relates to the timeliness of fitness to practise investigations. Despite introducing improvement measures over the past two years, the PSA found that delays persist and progress has yet to materialise. The GCC is continuing efforts to address this issue, and the PSA will monitor developments closely.
The PSA emphasised that meeting a standard reflects good performance, not perfection, and that its reviews are part of an ongoing process to ensure regulators protect the public and uphold confidence in health and care professions.
