The Professional Standards Authority (PSA) has published its annual performance review of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), identifying delays in fitness to practise investigations as a key area of concern.
While the GPhC met 17 of the 18 Standards of Good Regulation, it failed to meet Standard 15, which relates to the timeliness of case handling.
The PSA noted that the GPhC has made progress in improving its processes but continues to face a growing backlog of cases and extended investigation timelines. These delays may impact public protection and registrant wellbeing, particularly in cases involving interim orders or serious allegations.
In response, GPhC Chief Executive Duncan Rudkin acknowledged the challenges and reaffirmed the regulator’s commitment to reform.
“We recognise that delays in fitness to practise investigations can have serious consequences. We’re investing in new systems and streamlining our procedures to ensure timely and fair outcomes.”
The PSA also praised the GPhC’s work on equality, diversity and inclusion, including its anti-racism initiatives and stakeholder engagement. The authority will continue to monitor the GPhC’s performance and expects further improvements in the next review cycle.
