The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has reported strong uptake and positive feedback for its employer advice line, a dedicated service offering guidance on managing concerns about nurses and midwives.

The advice line, launched to support early intervention and proportionate responses, has helped employers navigate complex fitness to practise scenarios, including when to escalate issues to the regulator.

Employers have praised the service for its clarity, responsiveness, and practical value in resolving concerns locally where appropriate. The NMC noted that many queries relate to conduct, capability, and safeguarding, and that early advice can prevent unnecessary referrals and reduce stress for registrants.

The regulator is encouraging wider use of the advice line, particularly among NHS trusts, care homes, and independent providers. It sees the service as a key component of its strategic shift toward upstream regulation, aiming to promote safer care environments and reduce the burden on its fitness to practise processes.

By supporting employers to manage concerns effectively, the NMC hopes to improve outcomes for patients and professionals alike, while ensuring that serious cases are referred promptly and handled with due process.
