The HCPC is closing its Temporary Register, following an announcement from the Department of Health and Social Care that the  COVID-19 Temporary Register must close on the 31 March 2024.

Over 28,000 former registrants and final year students joined the Temporary Register(s) to support patients and registrants, which were set up to respond to the unprecedented need for health and care services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anyone who wishes to continue practising beyond 31 March 2024 will need to apply to join the HCPC’s main Register. Applications to join the main Register will need to be submitted in advance of the Temporary Register’s closure, otherwise professionals who are on the Temporary Register will need to stop practising using the protected title from 1 April 2024.

Bernie O’Reilly, Chief Executive and Registrar, said:

We are hugely grateful to the 22,000 former registrants and 6,000 final year students who joined the Temporary Register(s) during the pandemic and made a vital contribution to the country’s COVID-19 response and recovery. We are pleased that some former registrants who joined the Temporary Register have chosen to join our main Register and stay in practice, continuing to provide vital services to patients and service users. I hope others will also consider doing the same.
