The General Medical Council (GMC) has published its annual whistleblowing report for 2024/25, detailing how concerns raised by individuals within the medical profession were handled and assessed for fitness to practise implications.
Of the 45 concerns received during the reporting period, 44 were reviewed by the GMC’s fitness to practise team, resulting in eight formal investigations.
The remaining 36 concerns were closed after initial assessment, while one was referred to the registration and revalidation team for regulatory action. The report highlights, the GMC said, it’s “commitment to supporting whistleblowers and ensuring that all concerns are treated seriously and confidentially.”
Anna Rowland, Assistant Director of Policy and Business Transformation, said whistleblowing plays a vital role in maintaining public trust.
“Concerns raised by colleagues and staff can be early indicators of fitness to practise issues. Our role is to ensure those concerns are assessed fairly and acted upon when necessary.”
The GMC confirmed that it continues to refine its whistleblowing procedures, including training for staff and improved guidance for those raising concerns. The regulator encourages anyone with information about unsafe practice or professional misconduct to come forward, noting that whistleblowers are protected under UK law.
