The General Dental Council (GDC) has confirmed the Annual Retention Fee (ARF) for 2026, setting the rate at £698 for dentists and £108 for dental care professionals (DCPs). The announcement follows the Council’s approval of its Corporate Strategy for 2026–2028, which outlines key priorities and funding requirements for the coming years.
The strategy, shaped by feedback from a 12-week public consultation over the summer, reflects calls from the dental profession for modernisation and greater efficiency. In response, the GDC has pledged to deliver an additional 7% in efficiency savings over the next five years. These savings will be achieved through streamlined registration processes and more effective use of estates.
Tom Whiting, Chief Executive and Registrar, said the GDC remains focused on supporting dental professionals in delivering safe and effective patient care.
“We have a clear delivery plan to achieve our strategic ambitions and remain committed to protecting the public and maintaining public confidence in the dental professions,” he said. “We will provide transparency about the work we do and will measure and report on our progress.”
The Council also confirmed that ARF adjustments from 2027 onwards will be capped at the Consumer Price Index (CPI), except in exceptional circumstances.
Dr Helen Phillips, Chair of the GDC, emphasised the importance of collaboration and trust. “Council’s priority is public protection by working with and through dental professionals,” she said. “By 2030, I want the GDC to be recognised as living by our values of transparency, respect, inclusion and purposefulness.”
The GDC’s strategic direction aims to enhance its effectiveness across all regulatory functions and strengthen its role as a valued partner within the dental sector.
